Action Items...

MYP Verification Visit

The big week is here! A few reminders in addition to the MYP Faculty Preparation for Authorization doc (this list may grow over the next few days):
  • Meeting on Tuesday: We will have a brief meeting at 3:15pm on Tuesday for last-minute reminders and to review units.
  • Units: As John instructed last week, please prepare one completed unit (including all documentation - rubric, formative and summative assessments, evidence of student work, etc.) for each course taught. Please have these materials ready for review at our brief check-in on Tuesday. They'll be added to the documentation in the Huston Room for the team's review and available to be picked up on Friday afternoon.
  • Coverage: Two subs will be on campus on both Thursday and Friday to provide coverage.

Special Schedules coming up

This week, we'll craft a few special schedules for upcoming events. Please note that 7th and 8th Grade will have a modified schedule on April 19 to hear a Holocaust survivor from 12:30-2:00pm. We will also have a special schedule for Earth Day on April 21.

Chapel

Just a reminder: upcoming MS Chapels will be led by the following Advisory groups:
  • April 12: Paco/Flores
  • April 26 Strate
  • May 10: Hartmann/Finch
  • May 17: Hunt
  • May 31: Taylor
If your group needs a different date, there is a little bit of flexibility (April 12 is open; Service Learning Chapels on April 19 and May 24 could swap). For details about awareness months or holidays, see the MS tab or the Cultural & Religious Observances tab on Chapel Planning 2016-2017.

Updating, Refurbishing, and Fixing...

Please continue to think about the needs for your classrooms and workspace and what updates you'd like to see for next year and capture ideas and requests on this doc.

Following up...

Conversation on PDA

Ann, Annie and Clare meet once a month to try to solidify ideas across the divisions and help to build consensus on a variety of issues. Handholding was discussed at the last MS faculty meeting, and this was a focus for the cross divisional meeting on Thursday. There is no written policy condoning handholding between any age or gender, and it was agreed that in situations outside of the classroom, that handholding should be considered an expression of friendship and be allowed. However, during instructional time this is should not occur. To clarify, PDA such as excessive hugging, sitting on each other, or necking is not appropriate and not permitted in any division at any time.

Next year's schedule

As Christian indicated last week, next year we will be expanding 6th Grade to 3 sections. In the coming weeks, we will be working on a master schedule for next year. This and next week, I will be in touch with each teacher individually about potential shifts in teaching assignments in anticipation of next year.

Upcoming Religious & Cultural Observances

  • April 1 marked the beginning of Autism Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Awareness Month.
  • Sunday, April 9 is Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week, the days leading up to Easter, for Christians.
  • The evening of Monday, April 10 marks the beginning of the Jewish festival Pesach, or Passover, which commemorates the ancient liberation of the Israelites from Egypt and celebrates freedom from persecution today.
  • Tuesday, April 11 is the Hindu holiday of Hanuman Jayanti, which celebrates the birthday of the god Hanuman. It also marks the beginning of the New Year for Theravada Buddhists.
  • Friday, April 14 is the Sikh holiday Vaisakhi, which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community. It is also Good Friday for Christians, which commemorates the death of Jesus of Nazareth.
