Action Items...

Communications

  • This week's Academic Highlights: Language Acquisition and Design (I'll send a link to submit course highlights early next week)
  •  Course pages on the myAW portal:
    • Please remember, once course pages are up and running, to post all homework assignments, handouts, and updated instructions on the portal in a timely fashion.
    • The Gradebook should be updated at least weekly.

Professional Growth

  • The schedule for Professional Growth is here: Schedule for Professional Growth 1617; and the folder for all Professional Growth docs is here: Professional Growth Docs: Templates.
  • If you haven't already, please reach out to Alicia to schedule a Professional Goals conference with me before September 23.
  • Observations
    • On the Schedule linked above, please note designated weeks for observations. Feel free to get the observation on the calendar at any time. Observation scheduling includes: a 15 minute pre-observation meeting the day before; observation of a full class period; and a post-observation meeting 2-3 days after the observation.

Chapel

  • The doc for Chapel Planning 2016-2017 is ready for Advisories to claim dates to plan! Find the MS tab on the bottom and claim any date that isn't designated for Service Learning.
  • More details about planning Chapel are forthcoming; for now, consider focusing on the LP attribute for the month as well as any observances that are noted (awareness months, holidays, etc.).

Student Recognition

  • Each week, we'll recognize students for modeling the LP Attributes through small and big ways. The past couple of years, these recognitions have happened at the weekly Friday Share. In the spring, we'd talked about integrating them into other parts of the week, such as Monday Morning Meeting and Wednesday MS Chapel. Let's try it during Chapel for First Semester, and we'll see how it goes.
  • The schedule for recognitions is here and linked at the bottom of this blog. Next week, we'll recognize students in the 8th Grade.
  • Please complete your nomination by 8:00am on Wednesday so Alicia can prepare the certificates. To nominate a student:
    • On the Student Recognition Schedule doc, select the tab for the corresponding Grade.
    • Find the name of the student you'd like to nominate.
    • Provide the date of the Chapel they'll be recognized.
    • Provide the LP Attribute you'd like to recognize the student for.
    • Provide 1-2 sentences describing how they model this attribute (this will be included in the certificate).
    • Provide your name.
  • We'll aim to recognize every student in a grade before second or third nominations occur, but, as we did last year, we won't recognize students inauthentically or hold back a timely and deserved honor. There are 10 slots for each Grade, meaning about 3-5 recognitions each week.

Teams to Reflect on the Program

  • Last year, we identified a handful of different teams to consider different aspects of the program, and last week another opportunity arose to look at the Orientation Trip. Here's the list of who signed up for what. Please let me know if this is something you're still interested in, or whether you're interested in looking at something else instead/as well, and we'll get some meetings on the calendar.
    • MS Handbook Review (2-3 meetings this spring) Jen, Jessica, Taralynn, Shannon COMPLETE!
    • Advisory Conference Review (1-2 meetings this spring, 1-2 in Fall 16 to consider how we can continue to refine the Advisory Conference model) Angelica, Kyle
    • Assessment (throughout 16-17 to consider how we are implementing the Assessment policy and ways to support faculty with this) Angelica, Shannon, John H
    • Journeys (1-2 meetings this spring, 1-2 in Fall 16 to consider how the Journeys are reflected in the curriculum and throughout the MS space) Shannon, Kyle, John H, Taralynn
    • Service Learning (1-2 meetings in Fall 16, 1-2 meetings in Spring 17 to consider how we can best implement the service learning program)Jessica, Shelli
    • Experience Days (1 meeting in August, 1-2 other meetings in Fall 16 to consider how we structure and implement Experience Days; also to follow up on the decisions we've made to frame these experiences as arts engagement) Kyle, Liz, Alice
    • Chapel (throughout 16-17 to develop the MS Chapel program)John R.
    • Admissions Process (1 meeting in August, other meetings throughout the fall to consider the overall process for MS admissions) Jen, Alice, Shelli
    • Orientation (2-3 meetings in Fall 16 to consider the purpose and structure of the Orientation Trip) Liz, Emma

                Think about...

This is a difficult weekend for many people as the US marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. There's not much to say about this that hasn't been said, but these poems might provide an opportunity for reflection, including words from some of the most famous contemporary poets.
